2009 CURRENT VACCINE SHORTAGES Shortages of important vaccines have been a recurring problem in the U.S. At this time the following vaccines are in short supply: RABIES: Available for treatment after a suspected rabid bite only, not for pre-exposure protection. JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS: A very small amount of the current vaccine is available each month. Contact The Healthy Traveler clinic if you feel you will truly be at risk of this disease at your destination. A new vaccine is expected next year. SHINGLES VACCINE: The manufacturer is producing only a very small amount of this vaccine currently since they appear to have shifted production to the chickenpox vaccine for children. It will probably be many months until the shingles vaccine returns in plentiful supply.
